About the Artist

About the Artist

Pritam Das is a Kolkata-based visual artist and a graduate of the College of Visual Art Kolkata. His artistic journey began with rigorous academic training, where he explored object drawing, outdoor studies, still life, figure studies, and foliage during his Bachelor of Fine Arts.

However, his practice took a defining turn when he developed a deep interest in the sewing machine an object closely tied to his personal history. Growing up, he witnessed his father earn a livelihood through this humble machine, making it a powerful symbol of survival, labor, and memory.

Initially studying its mechanical structure nuts, bolts, and intricate forms , Pritam gradually deconstructed and reinterpreted the sewing machine through diverse mediums such as watercolor, acrylic, mixed media, pen & ink, lino cut, and woodcut. Over time, it evolved into the central motif of his work.

For the artist, the sewing machine becomes more than an object it transforms into a metaphor for time, transformation, and civilization. Much like its spinning wheel, time moves continuously, reshaping landscapes and lives. Traditional homes and familiar environments are steadily replaced by urban structures, yet a subtle thread of nostalgia continues to bind us to our roots.

Through his work, Pritam Das seeks to capture this tension between urbanization and memory, inviting viewers to reflect on change, identity, and the enduring emotional connections that define human experience. He continues to explore the evolving forms of the sewing machine, using it as a visual language to narrate stories of time, transition, and belonging

Threads of Time & Transformation

Through painting, printmaking, and mixed media, Pritam Das explores the emotional relationship between memory, labor, and urban transformation. Centered around the symbolic form of the sewing machine, his works reflect the rhythm of changing civilization while preserving fragile threads of nostalgia, identity, and human experience. Each artwork becomes a visual dialogue between tradition and modernity, movement and stillness, past and present.
